Dustdevils Open 2021 Defeating Javelinas

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International (3-1, 2-1 LSC) used a 17-0 run from the start of the third quarter until 1:58 remaining in the quarter to regain the lead, open it to double digits and went on to defeat the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas (2-1, 2-1 LSC) 62-48.
 
The first two quarters saw both teams hold control. After the first quarter, TAMIU jumped out to a 15-6 lead thanks in part to a 10-0 run over the final 7:15 and 11 points by senior Nicole Heyn. In the second quarter, the Javelinas used a 13-2 run over the first 7:46 of the frame to take a four-point lead, ultimately holding a 24-21 lead at the break.
 
Both teams, despite large runs in each quarter struggled from the field. The Javelinas held a slim 30%-to-29% shooting margin in the first half.
 
The Dustdevils took control for good in the third quarter behind the 17-0 run. During the run that started with senior Eva Langton's layup, junior Josselin Geer scored nine points and the Dustdevils hit three triples in the stretch to take a 42-28 lead into the fourth.
 
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle as both teams matched each other's 20 points.
 
The second half was exceptional for the Dustdevils, shooting 68% from the floor and 42% from three. For the game, TAMIU shot 49% from the field and 38% from three.
 
On the other hand, the Dustdevils held the Javelinas to 36% in the second half and 33% for the game, as well as 27% from three.
 
For the Javelinas, junior Brianna Pena led the way with 14 points, followed by freshman Janessa Payne setting her early career high of nine points.
 
For the Dustdevils, Heyn finished the game with a career-high 23 points, topping her previous high she set against the Javelinas in their matchup on February 15, 2020 and added nine rebounds.
 
Senior Patrycja Jaworska followed behind with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Geer and Langton both added nine points each.
 
The Dustdevils are scheduled to return to action on January 4 when they face Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas to close out the season series.
