LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International men's basketball continued its hot start to the 2021-22 season with a dominating 61-39 win over Colorado State University Pueblo.
It was even early as the Dustdevils (5-0, 0-0 LSC) held just a 14-12 lead with 9:03 remaining in the first half.
From there, TAMIU went on to outscore the ThunderWolves (2-3, 0-0 RMAC) 21-8 to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room.
The Dustdevils rallied to shoot 40% (12-for-30) from the field over the first 20 minutes, 5-for10 from three and 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
TAMIU then added to its lead in a defensive battle in the second half 26-19 to make the final 61-39.
CSU Pueblo trimmed the deficit to 38-32 with 10:59 remaining and from there the Dustdevils outscored the ThunderWolves 23-7 to blow things open
On the night, the Dustdevils shot just 37.7% (23-for-61), but a solid 43% (6-for-14) from distance. TAMIU also went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. The key number was out-rebounding CSU Pueblo 46-36 on the night.
The ThunderWolves finished the game with a shooting percentage of 27.8% (15-for-54), 1-for-14 from three and 8-for-18 from the charity stripe.
Three Dustdevils finished in double figures, with freshman
Journee Phillips leading the team with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
Junior
Jermaine Drewey followed with 14 points (5-for-9 from field; 3-for-6 three point) and four rebounds, while senior
Greg Bowie II had 11 points and five rebounds.
Senior
Cameron Bowles led the team with nine rebounds and added four points.
TAMIU looks to continue its program best start when they hit the floor tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. CST/3 p.m. MST against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in Pueblo, Colo.
