KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball (1-4, 1-4 LSC) fell 3-1 (16-25, 28-26, 16-25, 16-25) in the series finale to Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-0, 4-0 LSC) on Wednesday.
Junior Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with a double-double of 18 kills and 12 digs as well as two blocks and an assist. Sophomore Carly Unruh posted eight kills, five digs, three blocks and a service ace. Junior Maison Kosse logged 36 assists with four digs and a block. On the defensive end, junior Regina Tijerina contributed 21 digs with three assists.
In the opening set, the Javelinas started red hot as they held a 7-2 lead early. TAMIU managed to fight back and pull with in two points at 8-6. However, another 7-2 run put TAMUK back up 16-9. The Javelinas strung together a few more runs to take the set 25-16.
The Dustdevils rebounded in the second set and jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the frame. The Javelinas were able to battle back and tie things at 10-10 and take a 14-11 lead as part of a 7-1 run. TAMIU eventually tied things back up at 17-17 and again at 19-19. A 4-0 run gave them the lead back at 23-22. TAMUK counterpunched and retook the lead 24-23. After trading points back and forth for a few rallies, the Dustdevils took the set with three-straight points and a 28-26 decision.
The third set was extremely close early on with six ties and three lead changes. With things tied at 6-6, the Javelinas went on a 6-2 run to go up 12-8. TAMIU tried to fight back and got within one point, but couldn't complete the comeback as TAMUK took the frame 25-16.
Once again in the fourth set, the Dustdevils started fast with an early 7-4 lead. However, the Javelinas responded with a 5-0 run for a 9-7 lead. TAMIU countered with a 5-0 run of their own to go back up 12-9. Unfortunately, TAMUK proceeded to pull off multiple runs to take the set and match 25-16.
The Dustdevils will take a break from Lone Star Conference play as they return home on Saturday, Feb. 13 to play host to Our Lady of the Lake. First serve is set for 5 p.m.Â
