LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (4-7, 4-7 LSC) split the series opening doubleheader 3-0, 3-0 with Oklahoma Christian (2-3 LSC, 2-3 LSC) on Friday.
GAME 1 – OC 3, TAMIU 0
The first game of the doubleheader was a true pitcher's duel with both starters throwing at least seven innings.
The Eagles broke the seal in the first inning scoring a run for the early 1-0 lead. The run came in on an RBI single up the middle. They scored again in the fifth inning to go up 2-0 on a moon-shot home run to straight away centerfield. OC scored their final run in the sixth inning to take the victory 3-0 on an RBI single to left field.
However, the story of the game was the two starting pitchers. OC's Gabe Rodery (2-0) earned the win after pitching a complete game shoutout with four hits and three strikeouts, while only allowing one walk. TAMIU's Abanny Garcia (0-1) took the loss after throwing 7.0 innings with eight hits, two earned runs, eight strikeouts and only one walk.
GAME 2 – TAMIU 3, OC 0
The second game was another pitcher's duel just in reverse of the first game.
This time the Dustdevils got on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Luis Flores brought home Antonio Buentello with an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
TAMIU added to its lead in the fourth inning with two more runs for the 3-0 lead. A Flores RBI single to left plated Ronnie Bailey, with a Matt Kissamis RBI groundout to the pitcher scoring Buentello.
Both pitching staffs refused to allow a run for the remainder of the game.
Bryce Faust (1-1) earned the win after 8.0 shutout innings with eight hits and strikeout, Hugo Mendiola (1) earned the save after only allowing one hit in the ninth inning. Ty Dudley (0-1) suffered the loss.
TAMIU will look to clinch the series tomorrow with the series finale set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
