Dustdevils Sweep Day Two At ASU Invitational

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball (5-6) swept both matches on the final day of the ASU Invitational with a 3-1 win (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) over Midwestern State (6-4) and a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-11, 25-23) of Western New Mexico (0-4).

MATCH 1 - TAMIU 3, MSU 1

In the first match of the day, junior Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with 17 kills, six digs, two blocks, a service ace and an assist. Both junior Rio Orion and sophomore Skylar Warde posted eight kills apiece, with Orion adding a dig. Freshman McKenna Flagler logged 37 assists with five digs, two aces and a kill. On the defensive side, Junior Regina Tijerina contributed 17 kills with six assists and an ace.

The opening set was incredibly close early with five ties. The Mustangs began to pull away with a 9-7 lead. They slowly began to build there lead with multiple, short point runs, and eventually took the frame 25-19.

The second set was close again early on, but the Dustdevils established a lead at 4-3 and held on to it for while. A 6-0 run by MSU put the Mustangs on top 14-11. However, TAMIU battled back and closed out the set on an 8-2 run to claim the 25-22 decision.

MSU started hot in the third set with an early 5-2 run. The Dustdevils responded though with a 4-0 run to take the lead 6-5. From there, things grew close as both teams traded points back and forth. The Mustangs were able to grab the lead again at 11-8 and held on to it for most of the set. Once again, TAMIU took over late in the frame with a 7-1 run and took the decision 25-21.

The Dustdevils took control in the fourth set, as they raced out to a 9-2 run to start. MSU counterpunched with three-straight points to cut the deficit to 9-5, but that would be as close as they would get. Every time the Mustangs would get close, TAMIU responded and push the lead out farther. They eventually won the match with a 25-18 decision.

MATCH 2 - TAMIU 3, WNMU 0

In the second match, Catalina once again led the Dustdevils with 18 kills, five digs, two blocks, two service aces and an assist. Freshman Lorena Martin Perez posted six kills with 10 digs, a block and an assist. Freshman McKenna Flagler logged 31 assists, eight digs, two assists and an ace. Defensively, junior Regina Tijerina contributed 27 digs with two assists, an ace and a kill.

The first set was all TAMIU as they started on a 8-1 run. WNMU fought to pull within five points at 14-9. However, the Dustdevils closed out the frame on a 7-2 run to take the decision 25-14.

The second set was more of the same as TAMIU started with a 10-3 lead. They later strung together a 10-2 run to go up 23-8, and eventually won the frame 25-11.

The third and final set was a bit closer to start with six ties and two lead changes. With the Mustangs up 12-8, the Dustdevils ripped off a 7-2 run to retake the lead 15-13. WNMU fought and eventually tied things at 22-22. However, a 3-1 run closed out the match and gave TAMIU the victory with a 25-23 decision.

The Dustdevils will be back in action as they return home on Tuesday, March 2 for the start of a two-match Lone Star Conference series against Texas A&M-Kingsville. First serve is set for 6 p.m
