Dustdevils Defeat St. Edward's 2-1 For First Victory Under Coach Hussak

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's soccer (1-1, 0-0 LSC) scored with just over 16 minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie and give head coach Jon Hussak his first win with the Dustdevils, beating St. Edward's (0-2, 0-0 LSC) 2-1 in a non-conference matchup.

The two team fought to a scoreless tie in the first half, but it was St. Edward's holding a large edge in shots, 10-2.

At the 53:03 mark of the second half, freshman Priscila Carrillo netted her first collegiate goal to make it 1-0 TAMIU with assist coming from sophomore Izabella Correa.

The Hilltoppers responded just 5:56 later, receiving a goal from Emma Viquez on an assist by Sarah Preston.

However, at 73:38, senior Valeria Macias buried an unassisted goal into the back of the net to give the Dustdevils a 2-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.

TAMIU needed just one-third of the shots the Hilltoppers needed to seal the victory. The Dustdevils were out shot by a margin of 22-8 and in shots on goal, 11-5. St. Edward's also led in corner kicks, 4-2.

Freshman Fabiana Solano was exceptional in goal, stopping nine of the 10 shots she needed to save.

The Dustdevils must return focus to the Hilltoppers, as the two teams will meet again on March 3. The contest will take place in Austin, Texas and this time will count towards the conference standings. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
