ODESSA, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (1-1, 1-1 LSC) got the first win of the Philip Middleton Era and evened the three-game series with a 10-6 win over UT Permian Basin (1-1, 1-1 LSC) on Saturday.
The Dustdevils wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning as a three-run home run to left center from Jerry Villareal brought home Luis Flores and Andrew Holsey to go up 3-0. They added another run in the second as Ronnie Bailey continued the home run train with a solo shot of his own.
In the top of the third, a throwing error by the right fielder scored Antonio Buentello from second to give TAMIU a 5-0 lead. In the bottom half, the Falcons scored their first runs of the game to cut the lead to 5-2. An RBI single through the left side scored the first run with an RBI fielder's choice scoring the other run.
The UTPB bats exploded in the bottom half of the fourth to tie things up 5-5. A solo blast to center added one run. The other runs came in on an RBI double and an RBI based loaded walk.
The Dustdevils retook the lead 6-5 in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Bailey that brought home Phillip Sanchez.
TAMIU went off for four runs to add to their lead and go up 10-5 in the seventh. An error by the second baseman scored Holsey to get things started. Daniel Quiroz's RBI single to left plated Villareal. An RBI sacrifice fly to center from Sanchez brought home Buentello. The final run of the frame came in as Ariben Gutierrez's RBI sacrifice fly to center scored Quiroz.
The Falcons would add one final run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single up the middle, but the Dustdevils took the victory 10-6.
Zach Pena (1-0) earned the win, only giving up two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Trever Berg (0-1) suffered the loss.
TAMIU will look to clinch the series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
