Dusdevils Clinch Series with 12-3 Win Over UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (2-1, 2-1 LSC) clinched the three-game series against UT Permian Basin (1-2, 1-2 LSC) with a 12-3 win on Sunday.

The Falcons cracked the seal in the first inning with a solo homer to left field for an early 1-0 lead.

The Dustdevils answered in the top of the second to tie things up 1-1. A Ronnie Bailey double down the left field line scored Antonio Buentello.

TAMIU's offense broke the game open in the top of the third with six runs to go up 7-1. Jerry Villareal got things started with an RBI single to right field that scored Luis Flores. Daniel Quiroz followed with a three RBI double to left center, plating Andrew Holsey, Villarreal and Buentello. Phillip Sanchez brought Quiroz home with an RBI single to right. Sanchez later scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the inning.

The Dustdevils added to their lead 8-1 in the top of the fourth as Quiroz drove in Holsey with an RBI single to right. The hits continued to come in the fifth as TAMIU pushed out to a 10-1 advantage with a Villareal two RBI single to left that scored Ariben Gutierrez and Matt Kissamis.

TAMIU added two more runs in the seventh to go up 12-1. Holsey scored on a wild pitch and Buentello brought home Villareal on a sacrifice fly to left. UTPB tried to mount a rally in the bottom half of the inning, but only scored two runs to pull within 12-3 with two RBI singles.

The Dustdevils eventually took the series clinching victory 12-3.

Joseph Garza Delapena (1-0) earned the win with 5.0 innings, four hits, one earned run and seven strikeouts. Caleb Vuono (0-1) suffered the loss.

TAMIU will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 12 as they play host to UT Tyler in the home opening, three-game series. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
