LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (6-15, 6-15 LSC) fell in the series finale to No. 1 Angelo State (14-2, 10-2 LSC) on Sunday.
The Dustdevils got things started early with a 2-0 lead to open the game. Antonio Buentello blasted a 2-run shot over the left field fence driving in Ronnie Bailey.
The Rams answered in the bottom half with three runs of their own to take the 3-2 advantage. A three-run homer to left brought in the runs.Â
TAMIU exploded for six runs in the second inning to jump back in front 8-3. Sergio Esqueda got things started with an infield single to score Luis Flores. Ariben Gutierrez followed suit with a bunt single to bring Brock Hargens home. Bailey plated Gutierrez and Esqueda with a two RBI double to right center. Buentello scored Phillip Sanchez with a sacrifice fly to left. Daniel Quiroz brought home Bailey with a RBI single to right.
ASU once again responded by cutting the deficit to 8-7 with four runs in the bottom half of the second. One run scored on a error by the first baseman, with another run scoring on an RBI single to right. The final two runs came in on a two RBI single to left.
The Rams tied things at 8-8 in the fifth inning. The run came in on a sacrifice fly to right field.
ASU retook the lead in the sixth inning after putting up eight runs for a 16-8 advantage. Back-to-back 2-run and solo homers brought in the first three runs. An RBI double down the left field line brought in another run. A grand slam to left center plated the final runs in the frame.
The Rams sealed the win with four runs in the eight inning for the 20-8 decision. The first run came in on an RBI single up the middle. The final three runs came in on a 3-run blast to left.
Carson Childers (1-0) got the win. Bryce Faust (1-3) took the loss.
TAMIU will be back in action on Tuesday, March 23 as they travel to Kingsville, Texas for a non-conference matchup with Texas A&M-Kingsville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
