SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M International baseball (5-8, 5-8 LSC) took the first game of the a three-game series 6-4 over St. Mary's (7-6, 7-6 LSC) behind a strong outing from Abanny Garcia on the mound.
The Dustdevils got off to a hot start as they broke the seal with four runs in their first at bat for an early 4-0 lead. A Ronnie Bailey two RBI double got things started, scoring Ariben Gutierrez and Phillip Sanchez. Brock Hargens later scored Daniel Quiroz with an RBI triple to the left centerfield wall.
The Javelinas got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the margin to 4-2. An RBI groundout to the shortstop scored the first run, with a sacrifice fly to right scoring the other run.
StMU added another run in the second to trim the lead to 4-3. Another sacrifice fly to right scored the run.
After both starters worked four scoreless frames, TAMIU added an insurance run to their lead in the seventh, pushing out to 5-3. Andrew Holsey plated Gutierrez with an RBI single to left center.
The Dustdevils put up another run in the top of eighth to increase the margin to 6-3. A Sergio Esqueda RBI double to the right field corner brought home Hargens.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Javelinas got a run to cut the deficit to 6-4. A sacrifice fly to left center plated the run.
Hugo Mendiola shut down the Javelinas in the ninth inning to give the Dustdevils the 6-4 win.
Abanny Garcia (1-1) earned the win after pitching 7.0 innings with nine hits, four errors, two walks and five strikeouts. Connor Schmidt (3-2) suffered the loss.
