LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (7-20, 6-19 LSC) fell in game one of the three game set 5-0 to No. 5 West Texas A&M (27-4, 24-3 LSC) on Friday.

Before the game, the Jorge Haynes family was honored for their continued generosity to Texas A&M International University and Dustdevils. Cynthia Haynes Ramirez represented the Haynes family throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and was joined on the field by her four brothers Jorge, J.J., Bobby and Larry. The Haynes' generous gifts helped fund the construction of the Dustdevil's home field at the program's start at 2007, and every year three to four baseball and softball student-athletes are awarded scholarships from an endowment set up in their name.

In what was a classic pitcher's duel, Abanny Garcia shined on the mound despite the loss. In his longest outing of the season, the McAllen, Texas native went 8.0 innings with five hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts.

The Buffaloes got their first run in the opening inning as an RBI single to right gave them an early 1-0 lead. After four scoreless frames, that added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to go up 2-0. They sealed the victory in the top of the ninth as a bases clearing double down the left field line gave WT the 5-0 victory.

Matthew Gauthier (9-2) earned the win, with Chandler Dean (2) earning the save. Abanny Garcia (1-3) took the loss.

The two teams will face off in game two tomorrow at 2 p.m.
