Dustdevils Lose Heartbreaker, Fall To Angelo State In Doubleheader

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball (20-14, 13-9 LSC) battled to extra innings in game one, but it was Angelo State (23-10, 15-7 LSC) who took the game, 3-2 in eight innings. In game two, the Rambelles took advantage of two, two out miscues in the third inning to score seven runs and defeat TAMIU 14-0 in five innings.

Game 1: Angelo State 3, Texas A&M International 2 F/8

After two scoreless frames, TAMIU started the scoring in the top of the third inning.

Junior Heather Ruiz belted a solo home run to left field to make the score 1-0, which would hold until the bottom of the fourth.

Angelo State scratched to runs across between the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead. The runs scored by way of an RBI single and sacrifice fly.

Junior Darrian Smith immediately responded for the Dustdevils with a solo home run in the top of the sixth to tie the game 2-2.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, it was the Rambelles walking off the game with an RBI single to win 3-2.

Cortez (10-6) threw 7.1 innings, allowing three runs, four hits, four walks and struck out seven.

Offensively, Ruiz and Smith led the way with 2-for-4 outings, while two other Dustdevils had a single hit.\

Game 2: Angelo State 14, Texas A&M International 0 F/5

In game two, Angelo State struck early and often en route to the victory.

The Rambelles received two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more to make it 5-0 after two innings.

Unfortunately for TAMIU, with two outs and the score 6-0, two miscues led to a crooked number and after three the score read 12-0.

A two run home run in the bottom of the fourth was the last of the scoring for Angelo State to take the victory, 14-0.

Freshman Chelsea Salinas (4-3) took the loss, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing five runs, four walks and struck out three. Of the four hits she allowed, only one left the infield.

Smith pitched in relief, allowing nine runs (three earned), six hits, three walks and struck out three.
Offensively, Smith, sophomore Victoria Maldonado and freshman Victoria Gonzalez equaled out to the three hits for TAMIU in game two.

The Dustdevils have a quick turnaround and face Angelo State again tomorrow in a non-conference clash. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
