LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (7-22, 6-21 LSC) fell 9-4 in the series finale to No. 5 West Texas A&M (29-4, 26-3 LSC) on Sunday.
The Buffaloes got on the board early in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The run scored on a fielding error by the shortstop. They added another run in the third inning on an RBI double down the left field line.
TAMIU responded and got the run back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. After getting on with a single to left and then stealing second base, Phillip Sanchez scored from second on an RBI single to right by Brock Hargens.
WT pushed their lead back out to 5-1 in the fourth inning with three runs. The first run came in on an RBIÂ single up the middle, with the other runs coming in by way of fielder's choice and another single up the middle.
The Dustdevils fought back as they scored twice in the bottom half to trim the lead to 5-3. Ronnie Bailey scored all the way from first base on an Isaac Gonzalez RBI double to center field. After advancing to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, Gonzalez later scored on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Quiroz.
The Buffaloes expanded their lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
Gonzalez earned a second RBI in the bottom of the fifth and cut the lead to 6-4 as he was plunked with the bases loaded and brought home Matt Kissamis.
WT added a run in the eighth on an RBI single to right center, and sealed the victory 9-4 with two more runs in the ninth on an RBI single down the right field line and a fielder's choice.
Chris Rodriguez (5-0) earned the win. Jose Gonzalez Jr. (0-1) took the loss.
The Dustdevils will be back in action on Friday, April 23 as they play host to Eastern New Mexico in a three-game set. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
