Dustdevils Drop Pair Of Heartbreakers Over Weekend

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's soccer (1-4, 0-0 LSC) took the pitch on Friday Sept. 17 and Sunday Sept. 19, but fell in two heartbreakers to Texas Southern, 1-0 and to Western Colorado, 3-2.

In the 1-0 defeat to Texas Southern, the lone goal scored came at the 52:41 mark of the second half.

TAMIU trailed the game in shots (14-6), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (4-2), but received exceptional goaltending by sophomore Fabiana Solano, stopping seven of the eight shots she faced.

Senior Valeria Macias and freshman Stefanie Petrova led the team with two shots each, while Macias and freshman Irene Robles each put a shot on target.

The Dustdevils had a chance to add their second win of the season, but they saw a 2-0 lead go by the wayside in a 3-2 OT loss to Western Colorado.

TAMIU started quickly against the Mountaineers, when Macias scored just 3:19 into the contest on an assist by senior Nicole Cohen.

Holding the 1-0 edge at halftime, the Dustdevils added its second tally just 4:52 into the second half, when senior Tritch Ann Grant scored to make it 2-0 on an assist from junior Vivian Martinez.

Western Colorado cut the deficit in half at the 69:23 mark, before tying the game on an unfortunate own goal by the Dustdevils off a Mountaineer corner kick at the 82:29 mark.

TAMIU had an opportunity to close the game with a penalty kick in the overtime period, but the ball unfortunately met the crossbar. It was Western Colorado scoring the golden goal with 1:18 remaining in overtime to take home the come from behind victory.

TAMIU outshot the Mountaineers 14-12 in the game and 11-5 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went the Dustdevils way, 6-4.

Macias led the way with nine shots on goal and put seven on the net. Grant added three shots with two on goal.

The Dustdevils take to the road to open Lone Star Conference play against UT Tyler at 3 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 22 in Tyler, Texas.
