LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball took the floor for the first time in 11 days, but were unable to hold on to a late lead, falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 60-56 in non-conference action.
The contest was as evenly matched as you could see, with both teams holding even through the first 10 minutes, 15-15.
The Javelinas (10-4, 3-0 LSC) then took the edge at halftime, outscoring the Dustdevils (10-3, 1-1 LSC) 16-14 in the second quarter to lead 31-29.
The Dustdevils had their best shooting quarter in the third, going 5-for-12 from the floor, to open a 44-42 lead going into the fourth.
TAMIU held the lead the majority of the fourth, and lead by as many as six with 5:03 remaining. However, over the remaining time, the Dustdevils were outscored 12-2, falling to the Javelinas 60-56.
TAMIU in the loss shot 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the field and 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc. The free throw line was again a rough spot, as the Dustdevils hit just eight of 17 attempts.
On the other side, the Dustdevil held TAMUK to 20-for-59 (33.9%) from the field and 7-for-23 (30.4%) from three. However, the Javelinas made 13 of 17 shots from the charity stripe.
TAMIU had three players reach double figures, with sophomore
Rai Brown leading the charge with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Freshman
Audry Hornaday was a spark off the bench, with 11 points (3-for-6 from three) and four rebounds, while senior
Eva Langton scored 10 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Sophomore
Clara Fernandez had another all-around stat sheet game, scoring seven points alongside six rebounds, three assists, six steals and two blocks.
