Dustdevils Fall To #1 Lubbock Christian 62-48

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball ran into a determined #1 Lubbock Christian team who was fresh off a loss on Friday and fell to the Lady Chaps 62-48.
 
After shooting 15-for-51 and 4-for-28 from three in its loss Friday, Lubbock Christian jumped ahead quickly, leading 20-10 after one quarter.
 
The Lady Chaps (12-2, 1-1 LSC) opened the contest 4-for-4 from three to match their Friday total and jumped ahead 13-5 quickly.
 
TAMIU (10-2, 1-1 LSC) didn't have struggles shooting as they shot 40% in the first half, but the turnover bug led to a deficit of 31-12 in the second quarter.
 
On the positive side, the Dustdevils sparked late second quarter to go on a 9-2 run to cut the halftime deficit to 33-21.
 
TAMIU continued its run in the opening stages of the third quarter as it cut the lead to 33-28, as the run grew to 16-2.
 
Lubbock Christian then put together a run of 11-3 to regain a double digit edge and lead 44-34 after three.
 
The final quarter saw the Lady Chaps reopen a lead of 18 points after a 10-2 run to open the final frame and hold on to seal the victory over the Dustdevils.
 
TAMIU in the defeat shot 16-for-45 (35.6%) from the field and 5-for-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc. The free throw line was not kind as the Dustdevils hit just 11 of 20 attempts.
 
On the other side, the Dustdevil held the Lady Chaps to 22-for-55 (40%) from the field and 8-for-30 (26.7%) from three. After a 4-for-7 mark in the first quarter behind the perimeter, the TAMIU defense held Lubbock Christian to 4-for-23 the rest of the way.
 
TAMIU had three players reach double figures, with senior Eva Langton and sophomore Clara Fernandez both having 13 points to lead the charge.
 
Langton scored all 13 in the first half and added seven rebounds and four assists. Fernandez, on the other hand, contributed nine rebounds to the cause.
 
Sophomore Rai Brown was the third Dustdevil in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
TAMIU has to put the loss behind them as they prepare for a Wednesday matinee against the team the upset the Lady Chaps, Texas A&M-Kingsville. Opening tip from Kingsville, Texas on Jan. 5 is scheduled for 2 p.m.
