LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball opened home play for the 2022-23 season and dominated visiting Dallas Christian, 92-49.
TAMIU (2-1, 0-0 LSC) would lead the entire game, beginning with a 19-6 lead through the opening quarter.
The Crusaders (0-4) had the deficit at 11-6 midway through the first, but it was the closest the game would be at any point the rest of the way.
The Dustdevils would then outscore Dallas Christian 31-16 in the second, doing so on 13-for-19 shooting, to take a 50-22 lead into the half.
After the half, TAMIU held the Crusaders to just nine points and 3-for-14 shooting, while scoring 22 points of its own.
In the fourth, it was the most even quarter, as the Dustdevils outscored Dallas Christian 20-18 to seal the victory.
For the game, TAMIU shot 46.4% (39-for-84) from the floor and made nine of 23 (39.1%) attempts from behind the arc. The Dustdevils also out-rebounded the Crusaders 45-30 and outscored them 58-24 in the paint.
On the other side, the TAMIU defense limited Dallas Christian to just 19-for-55 shooting (34.5%) and 2-for-17 (11.8%) from the perimeter.
Junior Rai Brown had her third consecutive 20+ point performance to open the season, scoring 28 points on 12-for-17 shooting, alongside three rebounds.
Freshman Meli Hornedo impressed off the bench, scoring 16 points with three rebounds of her own, while sophomore Evelyn Quiroz scored four points, had a team high eight rebounds and added four assists.
Freshman Angelique Morgan stuffed the stat sheet herself, scoring four points, collecting six rebounds and dishing out a team best six assists.
The Dustdevils take the court for a rematch against Dallas Christian inside the KCB, tomorrow, Nov. 17 with opening tip at 2 p.m.
