SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball saw a repeat of Friday's results on Saturday, splitting its doubleheader, defeating New Mexico Highlands 8-0 in five innings and falling to Angelo State 10-1 in five innings.
Game 1: Texas A&M International 8, New Mexico Highlands 0 F/5
 
TAMIU got the bats going early, scoring all eight runs in the first three innings.
 
In the bottom of the first, junior 
Briana Arredondo started the scoring with a two-run home run to give the Dustdevils a 2-0 lead.
 
TAMIU was held scoreless in the second inning, then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning.
 
Junior 
Heather Ruiz started the scoring with an RBI triple and then fellow junior 
Darrian Smith followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
 
Freshman 
Dynasty Harpel drove in a run to make it 5-0 on a fielder's choice, fellow freshman 
Sara Papizan drove in two more runs on a two RBI double to make it 7-0 and graduate student 
Melanie Gamboa finished the scoring with an RBI single of her own.
 
Smith was again fantastic in the circle allowing just two hits and striking out six in the complete game effort, facing one batter over the minimum for five frames.
 
Offensively, sophomore 
Victoria Gonzalez (2-for-2) and Ruiz (2-for-3) led the way, while six others collected a single hit.
Game 2: #9 Angelo State 10, Texas A&M International 1
 
In game two, offense was hot early, but this time for the opposition.
 
Angelo State jumped ahead early scoring all ten runs in the first two innings, including six in the first and four in the second.
 
TAMIUI got its lone run in the top of the fourth inning, after an RBI single by Smith scored junior 
Felicity Bernal.
 
Papizan started on the mound and allowed five runs and five hits, facing only those five batters.
 
Freshman 
Carla Arellano pitched three innings of relief allowing five runs, seven hits and five walks. Gonzalez pitched the fourth inning and struck out one.
 
Smith, Gonzalez, Papizan and Gamboa all earned a single hit in the contest on the offensive end.
 
TAMIU concludes it trip in San Angelo tomorrow, Feb. 20 with one last chance to steal a victory from Angelo State, as they meet the Rambelles for a third time at 12 p.m.
