SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball got a third chance to play #9 Angelo State on Sunday in the ASU Invitational, but in the end, it was again the Rambelles coming out victorious, 9-4.
Angelo State jumped ahead with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.

TAMIU would respond in the top of the second inning when freshman
Sara Papizan tied the game with an RBI single.

The Rambelles then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead at 6-1.

The Dustdevils began to chip away in the top of the fourth, when junior
Heather Ruiz singled in two runs to cut the deficit in half to 6-3.

Sophomore
Victoria Gonzalez followed in the fifth inning with an RBI double to make the score 6-4, for the final run across for TAMIU.

The Dustdevils had an opportunity to add more in the frame, but left the bases loaded.

The final runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth, when Angelo State brought three across on a double.

Junior
Darrian Smith got the start in the circle and threw 4.1 innings, allowing nine runs, five hits, six walks and six strikeouts.

Gonzalez pitched in relief, allowing one hit, two walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Offensively, TAMIU collected 13 hits, with Ruiz, Gonzalez, Papizan, Smith, graduate student
Melanie Gamboa and junior
Briana Arredondo all having two hits each.

The Dustdevils continue their long road stretch to open the season with a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas. The games are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
