TAMIU Falls In Doubleheader to #17 Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International rounded out its pre-conference schedule, falling to #17 Texas A&M-Kingsville in doubleheader action.

Game 1: Texas A&M-Kingsville 5 Texas A&M-International 2

After a scoreless opening inning, TAMIU jumped on the board in the second inning, thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore Victoria Gonzalez to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dustdevils.

Unfortunately for TAMIU, it was the only runs they'd put on the board and the Javelinas used a five-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam, to seal the game one victory.

Junior Darrian Smith got the start for the Dustdevils and allowed five runs, seven hits and one walk in the complete game effort.

Offensively, TAMIU could only muster two hits in the contest with Gonzalez and junior Heather Ruiz each having one.

Game 2: Texas A&M-Kingsville 4, Texas A&M International 0

In game two, the Dustdevils got more strong pitching, but just couldn't get the runs across.

In the first two innings, TAMIU got runners on first and second, but couldn't bring a run in.

The Javelinas scored two in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice squeeze and a wild pitch.

The game appeared to be tied in the top of the fifth inning on a two RBI double by Gonzalez, but a foul ball call to the surprise of many took away the runs and ended the threat.

The only other runs came in the bottom of the fifth when TAMUK had a run walked in and a sacrifice fly.

The Dustdevils again got two runners on in the top of the seventh, but the Javelinas would leave them stranded.

Freshman Carla Arellano pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, five hits and two walks.

Fellow freshman Sara Papizan pitched 1.2 innings, walking two and striking out one.

TAMIU recorded four hits in the contest with Ruiz, graduate student Melanie Gamboa, sophomore Kristy Alanis and freshman Dynasty Harpel all having one each.

The Dustdevils begin conference play this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 4 against St. Mary's. First pitch from San Antonio, Texas is scheduled for 3 p.m.
