KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International rounded out its pre-conference schedule, falling to #17 Texas A&M-Kingsville in doubleheader action.
Game 1: Texas A&M-Kingsville 5 Texas A&M-International 2
Â
After a scoreless opening inning, TAMIU jumped on the board in the second inning, thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore
Victoria Gonzalez to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dustdevils.
Â
Unfortunately for TAMIU, it was the only runs they'd put on the board and the Javelinas used a five-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam, to seal the game one victory.
Â
Junior
Darrian Smith got the start for the Dustdevils and allowed five runs, seven hits and one walk in the complete game effort.
Â
Offensively, TAMIU could only muster two hits in the contest with Gonzalez and junior
Heather Ruiz each having one.
Game 2: Texas A&M-Kingsville 4, Texas A&M International 0
Â
In game two, the Dustdevils got more strong pitching, but just couldn't get the runs across.
Â
In the first two innings, TAMIU got runners on first and second, but couldn't bring a run in.
Â
The Javelinas scored two in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice squeeze and a wild pitch.
Â
The game appeared to be tied in the top of the fifth inning on a two RBI double by Gonzalez, but a foul ball call to the surprise of many took away the runs and ended the threat.
Â
The only other runs came in the bottom of the fifth when TAMUK had a run walked in and a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Dustdevils again got two runners on in the top of the seventh, but the Javelinas would leave them stranded.
Â
Freshman
Carla Arellano pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, five hits and two walks.
Â
Fellow freshman
Sara Papizan pitched 1.2 innings, walking two and striking out one.
Â
TAMIU recorded four hits in the contest with Ruiz, graduate student
Melanie Gamboa, sophomore
Kristy Alanis and freshman
Dynasty Harpel all having one each.
Â
The Dustdevils begin conference play this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 4 against St. Mary's. First pitch from San Antonio, Texas is scheduled for 3 p.m.
