LAWTON, Okla. – Texas A&M International women's basketball bounced back in a huge way after Monday's setback, defeating Cameron 70-66 to clinch the #9 seed in next week's Lone Star Conference tournament.
The Dustdevils (17-9, 8-7 LSC) came out strong in the opening quarter, using a 12-2 run after trailing 3-0 with the opening basket to lead 18-13 through the opening ten minutes.
The second quarter was on the side of the Aggies (15-10, 10-5 LSC), as they managed to outscore TAMIU 20-11 and take the lead into the locker room, 33-29.
Out of the locker room, Cameron allowed the Dustdevils to get back in the game early, but then opened up a lead of five and then later six points, before TAMIU chipped away at the end of the third quarter to trail by just two points going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Dustdevils jumped ahead in the opening 5:15 to take a 65-59 lead, before growing it to a seven-point, 68-61 lead with 2:31 remaining.
Cameron continued to fight until the end, but TAMIU's defense held serve in the waning seconds of a 68-66 game to seal the victory with free-throws.
TAMIU, for the game, shot 44.2% (23-for-52) from the floor and 31.6% (6-for-19) from deep The Dustdevils attempted 25 free-throws in the game and capitalized on 18.
On the other side, the Aggies finished 23-for-72 (31.9%) from the floor and 7-for-32 (21.9%) from behind the arc, the second lowest percentage for both this season for Cameron. They did go 13-for-17 at the charity stripe.
Sophomore
Emily Swiercz led TAMIU on the score sheet, scoring 20 points, making six of 10 attempts from behind the arc.
Freshman
Evelyn Quiroz, off the bench, had a career day, scoring 19 points with 12 rebounds and eight assists.
Sophomore
Clara Fernandez followed with a 17 point, nine rebounds performance, while fellow sophomore
Rai Brown added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Dustdevils have one more game on the 2021-22 regular season schedule and that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 26 in Canyon, Texas against West Texas A&M. Opening tip for the regular season finale is set for 2 p.m.
