SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball began Lone Star Conference play on Friday against St. Mary's, but in the end it was the Rattlers taking the doubleheader by final scores of 5-2 and 7-0.

St. Mary's was the first to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead.

TAMIU took away the deficit and gained the lead in the top of the third when junior
Heather Ruiz drove in two runs on an RBI double to give the Dustdevils a 2-1 edge.

The Rattlers wasted no time responding, scoring two in the bottom of the third inning to lead 3-2, then added to the lead in the sixth with two more runs.

Junior
Darrian Smith got the start for TAMIU and in four innings, allowed three runs, six hits, three walks and struck out seven.

Freshman
Carla Arellano pitched two innings and allowed two runs, two hits and walked one.
Â
Offensively, the Dustdevils could only manage five hits with five different players having a single hit.
Game 2: St. Mary's 7, Texas A&M International 0

In game two, only the Rattlers could bring runs across, but the score only turned late in the contest.

In the first two innings, St. Mary's scored a single run in each frame, and that 2-0 lead stayed the same until the sixth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Rattlers added five runs to make it the eventual final score.

TAMIU's best chance came in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to push a run across.

Sophomore
Victoria Gonzalez started the game for TAMIU and in 5.2 innings, allowed seven runs (six earned), six hits and walked seven.

Freshman
Sara Papizan pitched the final 1/3 innings, walking one.
Â
TAMIU recorded six hits in game two, with Gonzalez going 2-for-3 to lead the way. Four others collected a single hit.

The Dustdevils rematch the Rattlers on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 1 p.m. in non-conference action.
