TAMIU Falls In Doubleheader To #6 West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened its weekend on the road against #6 West Texas A&M and unfortunately fell in both contests 6-1 and 10-4.

Game 1: #6 West Texas A&M 6 Texas A&M International 1

West Texas A&M did all of its damage in the first three innings, scoring two runs in each of the three frames.

The Lady Buffs chased junior starter Darrian Smith after 2+ innings, with Smith allowing six runs, six hits, one walk and struck out five of the six outs she recorded.

TAMIU scored its lone run in the top of the sixth off an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman Hannah Reiley to score sophomore Kristy Alanis.

Freshman Carla Arellano pitched extremely well in relief, allowing two hits, one walk and two strikeouts over four innings.

Offensively, TAMIU had five hits with Alanis, freshman Alex Hernandez, junior Heather Ruiz and sophomores Victoria Gonzalez and Carolina Carbajal all registering one each.

Game 2: #6 West Texas A&M 10, Texas A&M International 4

In game two, the Lady Buffs jumped ahead early, yet again, taking a 1-0 lead through one inning, then added four in the second inning to make it 5-0.

TAMIU would respond with a big top of the third to trim the deficit to 5-4.

In the frame, Gonzalez singled in Alanis, followed by a three RBI double by Reiley to score junior Briana Arredondo, sophomore Sarah Chavez and freshman Kristin Maldonado.

However, it was the closest the Dustdevils would come as West Texas A&M added two insurance runs in the fifth to lead 7-4 and then three more in the sixth to seal the 10-4 victory.

Gonzalez started in the circle, and in four innings, allowed six runs, six hits, three walks and struck out three.

Freshman Sara Papizan in two innings of relief, allowed four runs (two earned), three hits, one walk and one strikeout.

TAMIU again had five hits in the contest, with Ruiz and Gonzalez combining for four of the hits with 2-for-3 showings. Reiley had the other hit on the night.

The Dustdevils conclude the road trip on Sunday, Mar. 20 in Portales, N.M. as they meet Eastern New Mexico. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
