Brown's Program Record 39 Points Leads Dustdevils 72-58 Victory Over Rattlers

LAREDO, Texas – Rai Brown's program record 39 points helped Texas A&M International women's basketball re-enter the win column, defeating St. Mary's 72-58.
 
Brown topped a record that was set on Dec. 19, 2015 by Keiona Mathews who scored 37 points against Oklahoma Panhandle State in a 73-58 win.
 
Early contest was in favor of the Rattlers (6-13, 2-11 LSC), 21-15 at the end of one, utilizing an 8-0 to end the quarter.
 
The Dustdevils (12-9, 5-8 LSC) would use an 8-0 run before the midway point of the second quarter to regain the lead, then go on to take a 37-34 lead at the half.
 
Out of the break, TAMIU would grow the lead to eight points, but St. Mary's would trim the deficit again to three. From there, the Dustdevils would utilize a 9-0 run to open a double-digit lead and hold a 53-45 edge going into the fourth.
 
In the fourth, the Rattlers would use the first half of the quarter to cut the score to 63-58 with 4:22 remaining, but TAMIU would score the final nine points to seal the win.
 
For the game, TAMIU shot 59.6% (28-for-47) from the floor, and 2-for-12 (16.7%) from deep. From the charity stripe, the Dustdevils went 14-for-19.
 
On the other side, St. Mary's shot just 40.7% (20-for-52) from the field, 6-for-20 (30%) from three and were 8-for-12 at the charity stripe.
 
In Brown's record setting night, she went 17-for-21 from the floor in route to her 39 points to go alongside a team high seven rebounds.
 
Sophomore Barbara Turkalj was the other Dustdevil in double figures with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Junior Marija Bakic would go on to score seven points with three boards and four assists, while freshman Angelique Morgan dished seven assists.
 
TAMIU closes out the home stand on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. when they host St. Edward's in a Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
