LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball was tied after three quarters against St. Edward's on Saturday, but a late bucket by the Hilltoppers upended the Dustdevils 66-63.
TAMIU (12-10. 5-9 LSC) battled early on, the score was tied 19-19 through the first quarter
The Dustdevils would open the second quarter with a 13-5 run over the opening 4:14 seconds to lead 32-24, but St. Edward's (11-11, 7-7 LSC) outscore TAMIU 14-4 the rest of the way to take a 38-36 halftime lead.
Out of the break, the Dustdevils went on an 8-4 run to take a 48-46 lead with 4:03 left in the third. The Hilltoppers closed the quarter on a 6-4 run to tie the game at 52-52.
In the fourth, both teams scored 11 points over the first nine minutes. St. Edward's then scored a layup and converted a layup with seven seconds left to win the game.
For the game, TAMIU shot 38.8% (26-for-67) from the floor and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from deep. From the charity stripe, TAMIU went 7-for-11.
On the other side, the Mustangs shot just 36.5% (19-for-52) from the field, 6-for-17 (35.3%) from three, and were 22-for-26 at the charity stripe.
Junior
Rai Brown led the way offensively with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Freshman Morgan Angelique followed with 14 points, while Junior
Clara Fernandez chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.
The Dustdevils start a four-game road trip when they meet UAFS on Thursday, Feb. 2 for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
