LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International men's basketball led St. Edward's at halftime, but in the end, the Hilltoppers pulled out the victory 67-61 victory.
In the first half, TAMIU (12-10, 5-9 LSC) jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the first three minutes of the game, but St. Edward's (16-7, 10-4 LSC) took control and went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 16-10 lead.
Over the next seven minutes, both teams scored seven points to make the score 23-17 with 6:42 left in the half.
The Dustdevils started to battle back and ended the half on a 10-3 run to take a 27-26 lead into the locker rooms.
TAMIU scored the first five out of the break to stretch the lead to six over the first 2:34 of the second half.
Unfortunately for the Dustdevils, the Hilltoppers found their stride and went on a 31-13 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 57-45 lead with 7:07 left in the game.
TAMIU closed the game on a 16-10 run but wasn't able to cut the lead past two.
The Dustdevils shot 22-for-51 (43.1%) from the floor on the afternoon and were 2-for-14 (14.3%) from behind the arc.
On the other side, St. Edward's finished 21-for-50 (42.0%) from the field and were 8-for-14 (57.1%) from deep.
A big factor in the game was the difference in points off turnovers. TAMIU scored six points off of turnovers, while the Hilltoppers scored 18.
Graduate Student
Greg Bowie II led the Dustdevils offensively with 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting to go alongside three assists and two steals.
Senior
Jermaine Drewey added 10 points and grabbed five boards.
Sophomore
Tiras Morton grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added seven points and two assists.
TAMIU starts a four-game road trip next week. UAFS is the first opponent and the opening tip on Thursday, Feb. 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST.
