LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball held on for its sixth straight victory, upending Oklahoma Christian 54-51 on Thursday.
TAMIU (11-4, 4-3 LSC) jumped ahead right away 6-0, and would the lead through the first quarter, leading 16-12.
The Dustdevils would grow the lead to 21-12 to open the second quarter, but the Eagles (1-11, 1-7 LSC) would fight back to cut the deficit to just one, but TAMIU grew its lead again and led 29-24 at the half.
Out of the break, the Dustdevils grew its lead to 12, 41-29, in the first five minutes, but Oklahoma Christian again cut the deficit down to just 47-42 to enter the fourth.
In the fourth, both teams struggled to score as it was just a 9-7 edge in favor of the Eagles. Oklahoma Christian would cut the deficit down to one, but were held to 0-for-4 shooting over the final 1:42 by the TAMIU defense to seal the victory.
For the game, the Dustdevils shot 33.3% (21-for-63) from the floor, and were just 2-for-16 from behind the arc. From the charity stripe, TAMIU went 10-for-11 (90.9%).
On the other side, the Eagles shot 37.7% (20-for-53) from the field, 5-for-20 (25%) from three and were 6-for-12 at the charity stripe.
Junior
Rai Brown had a career night, with a career-high 32 points on 13-for-20 shooting and another career best with 10 rebounds for the double-double, while adding five steals defensively.
Junior
Marija Bakic followed with seven points and six rebounds, while fellow junior
Emily Swiercz had six points.
Freshman
Angelique Morgan also scored six points, alongside four rebounds and six assists.
The Dustdevils take the floor again on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. when they host UAFS in the KCB.
