Chadron, Neb. - In a nail-biting season opener, the Dustdevils edged out a hard-fought 80-78 victory over the Chadron State Eagles. The game showcased impressive performances from both teams in a game that came down to the last possession.
The Dustdevils started the game with a strong first half, shooting at an impressive 62.96% from the field. The offensive prowess was led by
Mathew Okoye, who finished the game with 18 points, connecting on 6-of-11 field goals and converting 6-of-8 free throws.
Shannon Strickland contributed 13 points, hitting 3-of-6 three-pointers.
The first half ended with the Dustdevils holding a slim lead of 42-36, setting the stage for a closely contested second half.
Chadron State, however, mounted a comeback in the second half, shooting at an impressive 61.29%. Bryce Latimer led the charge with 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Josh Robinson added 22 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing a double-double effort.
The game featured multiple lead changes. The Eagles fought hard in the paint, accumulating 56 points down low, while the Dustdevils relied on a balanced scoring attack and contributions from their bench, scoring 29 bench points.
The Dustdevils' defense played a crucial role, tallying 12 steals and forcing 18 turnovers throughout the game.
