Dustdevils Fall to Greyhounds To Open Series

PORTALES, New Mexico – Texas A&M International baseball opened a four-game set against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on the road Friday night, and fell in game one of the series 9-3.
 
 TAMIU (0-5, 0-5 LSC) scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, when senior Leeandro Alfonzo, singled in redshirt freshman Thomas Barnhart. 
 
 The Greyhounds (1-4, 1-4 LSC) answered right back in the bottom of the second, scoring off an error. 
  
 TAMIU recaptured the lead in the top of the fifth when junior Joseph Cruz singled in Alfonzo and junior Daniel Quiroz hit a sacrifice fly to score Hernandez. 
 
 Eastern New Mexico cut the lead to one with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. 
  
 It was a tough seventh inning for TAMIU as the Greyhounds scored seven runs in the inning to open a 9-3 lead, then held the Dustdevils scoreless in the final two innings to earn the win. 
  
 Freshman Cody Templeton started on the bump for TAMIU and over 6 innings, allowed two runs (one earned), six hits, walked one and struck out three.
  
 Three Dustdevils combined for 2 innings of relief and allowed seven runs, three hits, four walks and two strikeouts.
  
 At the plate, TAMIU recorded seven hits against two Eastern New Mexico pitchers, with junior Ariben Gutierrez leading the way with a 3-for-4 day. 
  
 The Dustdevils now look to a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11, as the Greyhounds host the Dustdevils for two seven-inning games that are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
