Dustdevils Split Doubleheader to Earn First Win

PORTALES, New Mexico – Texas A&M International Baseball earned its first win of the season on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico. 
  
 GAME 1: Eastern New Mexico 5 Texas A&M International 4
  
 Eastern New Mexico was the first to hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when they took a 1-0 lead after a single up the middle. They added another run in the bottom of the third on a single to left field. 
  
 TAMIU then responded with two runs in the top of the fourth, scoring off an error and an RBI single from sophomore Alex Lugo.
  
 In the top of the seventh inning, junior Joseph Cruz blasted a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Dustdevils the lead.
  
 In the bottom of the seventh, the Greyhounds pushed across three runs including a walk-off RBI single. 
  
 Sophomore Lalo Salinas worked 6 innings in the start and allowed five runs, 10 hits, walked three and struck out three.
  
 Lugo, Cruz, senior Matt Kissamis, junior Antonio Buentello and junior Ariben Gutierrez all recorded one hit. 
  
 GAME 2: Texas A&M International 12 Eastern New Mexico 2
  
 TAMIU bounced back in game three of the series and the second game of the doubleheader.
  
 In the first inning, Eastern New Mexico scored one run with an RBI single. 

The Dustdevils scored two runs in the top of the second of an RBI double from Buentello and an error. They added one more in the fourth of an RBI double to take a 3-1 lead. 
  
 The Greyhounds cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth off a wild pitch, but TAMIU opened the floodgates in the top of the sixth plating six.
They scored one run off an error, one run off a wild pitch, two off a single from Lugo, one off a single from Gutierrez, two off a single from Lee and one off a single from senior Brock Hargens
The Dustdevils scored one more in the top of the seventh off an RBI single from Lugo. 
  
 Junior Jan Cabrera had another fantastic start, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), six hits, no walks and striking out six.
Two pitchers recorded 1.2 innings of relief and allowed no runs, three hits, no walks and striking out three. 
  
 All nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one hit and Mario Chacon, Lugo, Gutierrez, Buentello and Alfonzo all finished with two. 
  
TAMIU looks to finish the series even with Eastern New Mexico as they square off in the finale tomorrow at 2 p.m.
