Dustdevils Split Doubleheader To Open George & Ola McCormick Challenge

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened its trip to the George & Ola McCormick Challenge on Friday in doubleheader action. The Dustdevils would come out on top against East Central 2-0, but would fall to Angelo State 6-1 to close the day.
 
GAME 1: TAMIU 2 East Central 0
 
TAMIU (3-4, 0-0 LSC) struck immediately in the top of the first inning, when graduate Victoria Maldonado crossed the plate on a double still to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Junior Erika Cortez, fresh off a no-hitter, went 3.1 innings without allowing a hit, before East Central (0-1, 0-0 GAC) got its only hit of the game in the top of the fourth.

Sophomore Victoria Maldonado would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to end the scoring.
 
Cortez extended her scoreless inning streak to 14 with another complete game shutout, allowing one hit while striking out 11 and walking five.

The Dustdevils offensively collected four hits, with freshman Kennedy Griego leading the way with a 2-for-3 showing.
 
Kristin Maldonado and junior Kristy Alanis collected the other two hits.
 
GAME 2: #18 Angelo State 6 TAMIU 1
 
In game two it was the Rambelles (4-3, 0-0 LSC) who jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.
 
TAMIU would cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Griego singled in a run, but the Dustdevils would unfortunately leave the bases loaded in the inning.
 
Angelo State would round out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning, adding four unearned runs, to make it a 6-1 game.

Senior Darrian Smith got the start for TAMIU and threw five-plus innings and allowed four runs (one earned), four hits, one walk, struck out four.
 
Sophomore Tessa Ramirez worked an inning of relief and allowed two unearned runs, two hits and walked two.
 
Offensively, the Dustdevils collected three hits, with Griego, Kristin Maldonado and freshman Katelyn Luera each having one.
 
TAMIU will face the same two opponents on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning again with East Central at 12 p.m., followed by Angelo State at 4:40 p.m.
