Dustdevils Unable To Hold Off Cameron In 79-71 Defeat

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International women's basketball returned home for the first time in two weeks, but were unable to hold off Cameron, falling to the Aggies 79-71 Thursday night.

After an early back and forth, it wsa Cameron (13-13, 10-10 LSC) holding an 11-6 lead halfway through the first quarter.

TAMIU (12-15, 5-14 LSC) would counter with an 11-2 run to take a 19-13 lead and would hold a 19-16 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter opened with an 11-0 run by the Aggies who took a 27-19 lead with 4:17 remaining in the half, as Cameron held the Dustdevils without a basket until the 4:01 mark. 

TAMIU would fight back the remainder of the quarter and would take a 34-33 lead into the locker room.

The Dustdevils took a four-point, 37-33 lead out of the break, but a 7-2 Cameron run gave the Aggies the lead of 40-39.

After TAMIU took a 41-40 lead, Cameron again utilized a run, this time a 10-0 run to open a 50-41 lead, but again, the Dustdevils chipped away to trail just 60-56 going into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, TAMIU saw its deficit grow to nine points on multiple occasions, but managed to trail just 74-71 with 1:39 remaining. However, the Aggies would score the final five points to seal the victory.

On the night, the Dustdevils shot 24-for-72 (33.3%) from the floor, 10-for-34 (29.4%) from deep and would capitalize on 13 of 17 free throw attempts.

On the other side, Cameron shot 26-for-59 (44.1%) from the field, 10-for-32 (31.3%) from three, and were 17-for-20 from the charity stripe.

Junior Rai Brown had yet another dominant performance, scoring 28 points with eight rebounds, and a pair of assists and steals for her 13th 20-point performance of the season.

Sophomore Vanessa Herrera followed Brown with a career best 15 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists, while redshirt freshman Madison Ansari netted 11 points with four assists.

TAMIU returns to the floor on Saturday, Feb. 18 when they meet Midwestern State for a 1 p.m. tip inside the KCB.
