West Texas A&M sweeps TAMIU in doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas – After falling on opening day, Texas A&M International baseball fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader by final scores of 4-2 and 9-5.

GAME 1: West Texas A&M 4 Texas A&M International 2

West Texas A&M scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-1 lead, in the first. 

After the two runs from the Buffaloes, junior Joseph Cruz scored on a throwing error off a single from junior Matt Kissamis to cut the deficit to 2-1. 

The Buffaloes scored one run in the third, but Kissamis hit an RBI single to left field, scoring junior Ariben Gutierrez. 

West Texas A&M scored an insurance run in the sixth inning and held the Dustdevils scoreless over the final four innings. 

Sophomore Lalo Salinas pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs, five hits, two walks, and striking out four.

At the plate, TAMIU collected four hits, with Kissamis leading the charge with 2-for-3 showings.

GAME 2: UAFS 9 Texas A&M International 5

Game two saw all 14 runs scored in the final four frames.

This time it was the Dustdevils taking their first lead of the series, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. 

The Buffaloes captured a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and two RBI singles. TAMIU scored its fifth-inning run on an RBI single, scoring graduate student Daniel Hernandez. 

West Texas A&M scored four runs in the sixth and added one in the seventh to take a 9-3 lead. 

The Dustdevils scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to an RBI single from junior Antonio Buentello and a sacrifice fly from senior Leeandro Alfonzo.

Junior Jan Cabrera pitched four innings, allowing one run, three hits, walking one, and striking out six.

Three pitchers combined for three innings allowing eight runs, seven hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. 

Sophomore Alex Lugo led TAMIU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Alfonzo had a team-high two RBI. 

TAMIU now looks for the first win of the campaign as they play West Texas A&M tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
