Cortez Throws Second No-Hitter In Program History As Dustdevils Sweep Day Three Of DII Spring Invitational

CONROE, Texas – Sophomore Erika Cortez threw just the second seven inning no-hitter in program history in the second game of today's two-game set, as Texas A&M International softball went 2-0 on the day with victories over Regis and Pittsburg St.

GAME 1: TAMIU 5 Regis 3

Regis (0-3, 0-0 RMAC) scored the opening tally in the top of the first to take the early 1-0 lead.

TAMIU (1-3, 0-0 LSC) bounced back right away with an RBI single from sophomore Eva Garcia to tie the game at 1-1.

The Dustdevils took the lead in the third inning when freshman Victoria Espinoza singled in a run to make it 2-1.

TAMIU added much need insurance in the bottom of the fifth when three runs crossed. Senior Felicity Bernal scored on a wild pitch on a strikeout for the first run, followed by another RBI single from Espinoza to make it 4-1 and then an RBI walk by sophomore Kristin Maldonado to go ahead 5-1.

The Rangers would threaten in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs with no outs, but were held from there.

Sophomore Carla Arellano started in the circle and pitched her second complete game of the season, allowing three runs (two earned), nine hits, one walk and struck out seven.

Offensively, TAMIU was able to scatter eight hits, with Espinoza (2-for-2, two RBI) and freshman Kennedy Griego (2-for-4) each having a multi-hit game.

GAME 2: TAMIU 1 Pittsburg St. 0
In the second game of the day, Cortez did what has only been done one other time in program history, throw a no-hitter in a full seven inning game.

The only other player to accomplish the feat was Delainy Thompson on Mar. 27, 2018, also in a 1-0 victory over Lubbock Christian.

The Dustdevils (2-4, 0-0 LSC) scored their lone run in the fifth inning when sophomore Tajanae Davis hit an RBI single to drive in her eighth run of the weekend.

The Gorillas (0-2, 0-0 MIAA) could only muster three baserunners: one walk, one hit by pitch and one error by TAMIU.

In the no-hit effort, Cortez struck out seven with just the walk and hit by pitch.

TAMIU had seven hits offensively, with Davis (2-for-2, RBI) and Kristin Maldonado (2-for-3) each having a multiple hits.

The Dustdevils close out non-conference play in the Angelo State University George & Ola McCorkle Challenge in San Angelo, Texas from Feb. 10-12. Two games await TAMIU on Friday, Feb. 10 when they play East Central at 12 p.m., immediately followed by a 2:20 p.m. first pitch against Angelo State.
