LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened its season series against Western New Mexico on Friday and took the doubleheader portion of the series, with 6-1 and 3-1 wins over the Mustangs.
GAME 1: TAMIU 6 WESTERN N.M. 1
It wasn't until the top of the third inning a run would score, when Western New Mexico (3-22, 1-16 LSC) jumped ahead with an RBI single, its lone run of the game.
TAMIU (14-17, 10-10 LSC) would jump ahead immediately after in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-1 lead, plating a trio of runs.
Junior
Kristy Alanis started the scoring with a two RBI single to make it a 2-1 game, then sophomore
Tajanae Davis's sacrifice fly right after made it 3-1.
The Dustdevils would add insurance in the sixth inning, when three more runs crossed.
Sophomore
Dynasty Harpel scored the first run of the inning after an error by the Mustangs, then another Western New Mexico error made it 5-1.
Alanis concluded the scoring with her third RBI of the game, another single, to make it the eventual final of 6-1.
Junior
Erika Cortez got the start and threw a complete game allowing just one run, seven hits, one walk and struck out seven, for her sixth win of the season.
Offensively, TAMIU collected seven hits of its own, with Alanis's (2-for-3, 3 RBI) leading the way, while five other collected a single hit.
GAME 2: TAMIU 3 WESTERN N.M. 1
Like game one, the Mustangs took the lead first, scoring in the top of the fourth with an RBI double for their lone run of the game.
The Dustdevils would leave a runner on third in the first and a runner on second in the fourth, but finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth.
TAMIU scored all three runs in that fifth inning, starting with a pinch-hit RBI single by Davis to tie the game 1-1.
Alanis drove in her fourth run of the day with an RBI single of her own to give the Dustdevils the lead, then freshman
Kennedy Griego pulled through with her own RBI single to make it the eventual final of 3-1.
Sophomore
Carla Arellano took the circle for TAMIU and in the complete game effort allowed just one run, four hits and struck out five, on her way to her sixth win of the season.
Offensively, the Dustdevils strung together six hits, with Alanis again leading the way with a 2-for-2 outing, with four others contributing a hit to the cause.
TAMIU concludes the season series on Saturday, March 18 against Western New Mexico with an 11 a.m. first pitch from the TAMIU Softball Field.
