Dustdevils Split Doubleheader with Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball split a doubleheader with St. Mary's on Saturday, winning game one 6-4 and falling in game two 1-0. The Rattlers lead the series 2-1 with the fourth game taking place on Sunday.

TAMIU took an early lead in game one scoring a run in the top of the first inning after senior Mario Chacon singled in a run.

The Rattlers answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Dustdevils took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after St. Mary's walked junior Joseph Cruz in a bases-loaded situation.

St. Mary's tied the game in the bottom of the second, but TAMIU scored once more in the top of the third when senior Marcos Alvarado singled in a run.

The Dustdevils scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

Senior Matt Kissamis singled in a run and Marion Chacon hit a two-run home run.

The Rattlers scored once in the bottom of the sixth and once in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't close the gap.

Sophomore Lalo Salinas pitched a complete game, throwing seven innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out two.

Graduate student Daniel Hernandez and Chacon led the Dustdevils from the plate with two hits each.

The Dustdevils held the Rattlers scoreless for five innings, but a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win.

Junior Jan Cabrera pitched a complete game throwing six innings, allowing one run on eight hits while walking two and striking out eight.

Kissamis, Chacon and Alvarado recorded the three hits for TAMIU.

The Dustdevils will play the Rattlers in game four at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 26.
