PORTALES, N.M. – Texas A&M International softball opened its season series against Eastern New Mexico, splitting the doubleheader with a 4-3 defeat in nine innings and a 2-1 victory in game two.

GAME 1: Eastern N.M. 4 TAMIU 3 F/9

Eastern New Mexico jumped ahead right away in the bottom of the first, plating a runs on a RBI walk and single to lead 2-0.
Â
The Dustdevils would tie the game in the top of the fourth, thanks to a two-run home run by freshman
Kennedy Griego, her first of her collegiate career.

TAMIU (9-13, 5-6 LSC) would take the lead in the top of the fifth, when sophomore
Tajanae Davis doubled in a run to make it a 3-2 game.
Â
The Greyhounds (13-10, 5-6 LSC) would be down to their final out of the game, before an RBI single in the bottom of seventh to make it 3-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Eastern New Mexico would walk-off game one with a home run to seal the 4-3 victory.
Junior
Erika Cortez pitched the complete game, throwing 8.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits, one walk and struck out nine.

Offensively, the Dustdevils collected 10 hits, with Davis going 2-for-3 and Cortez going 2-for-4 to lead the charge. Eight of the nine starters collected a hit in the game.

GAME 2: TAMIU 2 Eastern N.M. 1

TAMIU jumped ahead in the top of the first, scoring both of its run, which proved to be enough for the game.
Â
In the inning, Griego opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, then junior
Kristy Alanis would score one batter later thanks to a Greyhound error.
Â
Eastern New Mexico did all its offensive damage in the third inning, with a solo home run to make it the eventual final of 2-1 and also picked up a single in the inning.

Sophomore
Carla Arellano picked up her fourth win of the season, throwing the complete game, allowing just one run, two hits and struck out five, throwing just 63 pitches. It's the sixth straight start Arellano has allowed two runs or fewer.

The Dustdevils offensively had three hits, with sophomore
Kristin Maldonado's 2-for-3 leading the team. Alanis picked up the third hit of the game.
TAMIU looks to take the season series against the Greyhounds on Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
