LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International Baseball attempted a late rally in the final inning of Friday's series opener against Lubbock Christian, but fell just short in an 8-7 defeat.
After three scoreless innings, TAMIU (14-21, 13-20 LSC) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior
Mario Chacon doubled in a run and junior
Antonio Buentello singled in a run.
The Dustdevils added one more in the bottom of the fifth when junior
Joseph Cruz scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior
Brock Hargens.
The Chaparrals (17-13, 16-13 LSC) tied the game in the top of the sixth with three runs, but the TAMIU answered right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Graduate student
Daniel Hernandez singled in the run.
Lubbock Christian took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs and led 8-4 after the top of the eighth.
The Dustdevils scored on a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-6.
Junior
Ariben Gutierrez scored on a ground out by junior
Isaac Gonzalez.
TAMIU tried to rally in the ninth and scored two runs right off the bat to cut the lead to 8-7.
Senior
Matt Kissamis doubled in a run and scored after the Chaparrals walked in a run.
The Dustdevils had the bases loaded with no outs, the Lubbock Christian sealed the win with three straight strikeout.
Freshman Cody Temleton started the game and had a no-hitter through five innings before allowing six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
Redshirt Freshman Marico Garcia threw one inning of hitless baseball in the ninth.
Kissamis led TAMIU from the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. The Dustdevils finished with 12 hits as a team.
TAMIU will be in action next on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian at home.
