LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball closed its series against Texas A&M-Kingsville, falling to the Javelinas 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
TAMUK (11-9, 8-4 LSC) jumped ahead in the top of the first with an RBI single and sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.
The Javelinas would go on to score the final four innings, scoring a single run in the fourth and sixth innings and two runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Dustdevils placed a runner in scoring position in the first, fourth and seventh innings, but couldn't push a run across in any of the three chances.
Senior
Darrian Smith got the start for TAMIU and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing three runs, four hits, five walks and struck out three.
Sophomore
Tessa Ramirez pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits, while freshman
Celeste Apaez threw one inning, giving up two runs, three hits and struck out one.
Offensively, the Dustdevils collected seven hits, with Smith (2-for-3) and graduate
Victoria Maldonado (2-for-4) leading the way.
TAMIU has a few days to prepare for a weekend road trip, as they head to San Antonio, Texas to meet St. Mary's who is receiving votes in the national poll. Doubleheader action kicks off the series on Saturday, March. 11 at 1 p.m.
