LAREDO, Texas – After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, Texas A&M International Baseball defeated Lubbock Christian in game four on Sunday, 24-20.
The Chapparals took an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first, but the Dustdevils responded right back plating a pair of runs.
Junior
Joseph Cruz hit a two-run bomb to score the runs.
Lubbock Christian scored two runs in the top of the second, but TAMIU took a 7-3 lead after scoring five in the bottom half of the inning.
Graduate Student
Daniel Hernandez doubled in three runs, senior
Matt Kissamis doubled in a run and the Chapparals hit a batter with loaded bases.
Lubbock Christian closed the gap to 7-4 in the third and tied the game in the top of the fourth with a trio of runs.
The Dustdevils recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth when senior
Mario Chacon singled in a run.
The Chapparals scored four runs in the top of the sixth and three in the top of the seventh to take a 14-8 lead, but TAMIU opened the floodgates in the bottom of the seventh, scoring nine runs.
Kissamis singled in a run, Lubbock Christian hit another batter with loaded basses, senior
Marcos Alvarado singled in a pair of runs, junior
Antonio Buentello hit a three-RBI double, junior
Isaac Gonzalez singled in a run and Cruz doubled in a run.
The Chapparal closed the score to 17-16 in the top of the eighth before the Dustdevils scores seven more in the bottom half of the inning to take an eight-run lead.
Senior
Ronnie Bailey doubled in a pair of runs, Hernandez singled in a run, Buentello scored on a throwing error, Cruz singled in a run and Kissamis singled in two runs.
Lubbock Christian scored four in the top of the ninth, but couldn't come any closer.
The Dustdevils threw 10 pitchers, none threw more than two innings. They combined to allow 20 runs (17 earned) on 20 hits while walking four and striking out eight. Junior
Isaac Ponce earned the win after pitching one inning where he allowed three runs on three hits.
TAMIU combined for 19 hits and were led by Kissamis who went 4-for-7 with three runs and four RBIs. Hernandez, Cruz and Buentello all recorded three hits.
The Dustdevils will be in action next at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at Angelo State for the start of a four-game series.
