Game Recap: Softball |

Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader To Aggies

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened its season series in doubleheader action against the Cameron Aggies on Thursday. In game one, Cameron won by a score of 1-0 and in game two, the Aggies again came out victorious 4-1.

GAME 1: CAMERON 1, TAMIU 0

TAMIU would start quickly in the top of the first with back-to-back singles to open the contest. However, despite both runners reaching second and third the threat ended as they were left stranded.

In the bottom of the second, Cameron opened the scoring with an RBI triple that made it a 1-0 game, the lone run scored in the contest.

After being held hitless over the second through fourth innings, the Dustdevils put together a threat in the top of the fifth.

With two outs, back-to-back singles then a walk loaded the bases for TAMIU, but again the Dustdevils couldn't capitalize on the opportunity to tie or take the lead.

Senior Erika Cortez pitched the complete game and allowed just one run, three hits, walked four and struck out five in six innings.

Offensively, TAMIU collected five hits with junior Kristy Alanis (2-for-4) leading the way, while three others contributed a hit.

GAME 2: CAMERON 4 TAMIU 1

The Aggies got the jump in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 3-0.

In the inning, a home run made it 1-0, then a two out error by the Dustdevils that would have concluded the inning allowed a run to cross and that was followed by an RBI single.

TAMIU scored its first run of the series in the top of the second when sophomore Dynasty Harpel hit her first collegiate home run to make it a 3-1 game, but despite threatening to add more, loading the bases, the Dustdevils would leave them full to end the inning.

Again in the third, TAMIU placed another running in scoring position, but she would be left stranded at second base.

Cameron would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, after the lead-off batter who reached on an error scored on a delayed steal rundown with runners on first and third.

Sophomore Carla Arellano tossed the complete game in the circle and in her six innings allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, six hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Offensively, the Dustdevils strung together just four hits, with Harpel (2-for-3) and fellow sophomore Kristin Maldonado (2-for-4) combining for them all.

Defensively, TAMIU was plagued by errors as the team committed four in the contest.

The Dustdevils close out the three-game series and look to steal a win in the finale on Friday, April 7. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
