TAMIU Earns First Win Against No. 1 Ranked Team In School History

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International Baseball beat the No. 1 ranked team for the first time in program history among any sport on Friday when it split a doubleheader against No. 1 Angelo State, losing the first game 0-4 and winning the second 2-1.
 
Angelo State 4, TAMIU 0 
 
After four scoreless innings, the Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win.
 
The Dustdevils recorded three hits as a team, with junior Joseph Cruz going 2-for-3 with one double and junior Ariben Gutierrez going 1-for-3.
 
Freshman Cody Templeton pitched all six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits while walking three batters and striking out two.
 
TAMIU 2, Angelo State 1

Angelo State took an early lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first.
 
TAMIU tied the game in the fourth when Cruz scored on an error.
 
The Dustdevils took the lead in the fifth with one run.
 
Graduate Student Daniel Hernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt, allowing senior Marcos Alvardo to score.
 
TAMIU held the Rams scoreless for the final six innings.
 
Cruz, senior Matt Kissamis, and junior Ariben Gutierrez were the three Dustdevils to record a hit. Cruz hit a double.
 
Junior Jan Cabrera pitched all seven innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out seven and walking three.
 
TAMIU will be in action next at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, for game four of the series at Angelo State.
