Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (9-9, 5-7) returned home to face Eastern New Mexico (11-6, 7-4) in Lone Star Conference play Thursday night in the TAMIU KCB. Coming down to the final seconds, the Dustdevils outlasted the Greyhounds in the 68-66 victory.
The first half saw five lead changes to start the game. ENMU seemed to hold the upper hand for most of the half, shooting 14-29 (48.28%) from the field and 4-6 (66.67%) from three-point range. The Dustdevils battled back and shot 13-28 (46.43%) from the field and 5-11 (45.45%) from beyond the arc. The biggest shot of the half being
Shannon Strickland's three-pointer to tie the game at 37 just before the half.
The Dustdevils carried the momentum into the second half, leading by as many as 11 after outscoring the Greyhounds 16-5. TAMIU shot 10-26 (38.46%) from the field and 2-7 (28.57%) from beyond the arc. The Dustdevil defense held ENMU to 36.00% from the field and just 1-3 (33.33%) from three-point range.
The Dustdevils capitalized on the Greyhounds' mistakes late in the game as ENMU had four turnovers in the final three minutes. The final blow came by way of free throws from both
Mathew Okoye and Strickland, putting TAMIU up two in the final seconds.
Okoye led the Dustdevils with 21 points.
Mike Rivera and Strickland both had 12 points on the night.
Esteban Roacho led the team in assists with six, and
John Achebe recorded seven rebounds.
The Dustdevils return to action on Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. when they face Western New Mexico in the TAMIU KCB.
