Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (10-9, 6-7) faced Western New Mexico (3-14, 1-11) in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon in the TAMIU KCB. The Dustdevils carried the momentum from Thursday night's win into today's matchup, earning a victory against the Mustangs 86-63.
McConnell's squad quickly set the tone, leading for most of the half. The team shot 17-31 (54.8%) from the field and 8-15 (53.3%) from three-point range. TAMIU's strong offense in the half was led by junior
Emaniel Alexandre who had 16 points in the first twenty minutes.
The Dustdevil defense rattled the Mustangs in the first half, forcing 11 turnovers and allowing just 31 points. WNMU shot 10-25 (40%) from the field and 3-6 (50%) from beyond the arc.
Never trailing in the second half, the Dustdevil offense kept its foot on the gas. TAMIU's biggest lead of the game came with just over two minutes left with the Dustdevils up 27. The team shot 15-35 (42.9%) from the field and held the Mustangs to 10-26 (38.5%).
Ten Dustdevils scored in today's victory, Alexandre leading the charge with a season-high 19 points and
Mike Rivera adding 16.
John Achebe led the team in rebounds with 10, seven of them coming on defense.
TAMIU returns to action next week traveling to San Antonio to face St. Mary's on Thursday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m.
