Dustdevils Improve to 17-4 with Win Over Mustangs

Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (17-4, 9-4) faced Western New Mexico (8-9, 3-9) in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon in the TAMIU KCB and came away with the dominating victory, 83-66.

TAMIU controlled the first quarter with a 62.50% field goal percentage, while WNMU struggled to find their rhythm, shooting only 21.05% from the field in the first quarter. WNMU improved their shooting in the second quarter, hitting 57.14% from the field. However, TAMIU maintained their lead, shooting efficiently and extending their advantage to take a 45-33 lead into the half.
The third quarter saw WNMU making a push to narrow the gap, shooting 43.75% from the field but the Dustdevils maintained their lead with a balanced scoring effort and effective free-throw shooting. The Dustdevils closed out the game with a strong fourth quarter from the charity stripe, shooting 90.91% from the free-throw line. The Mustangs struggled again in the final quarter, shooting only 37.50% from the field.

Raiana Brown led all scorers with an impressive 32 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Samiyah Worrell added 15 points and 3 assists. Ngozi Obineke and Angelique Morgan also had strong performances, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.

TAMIU will return to action next week when they travel to San Antonio, TX to face St. Mary's on Thursday, February 1 at 5:30 pm.
