San Antonio, Texas – The Dustdevils (18-4, 10-4) faced the Rattlers of St. Mary's University (3-16, 3-10) in Lone Star Conference play Thursday evening in San Antonio, TX and came away with the dominating victory, 77-62.
TAMIU started the game with a strong defensive performance, forcing a slew of turnovers to disrupt St. Mary's offensive efforts. On the other side, the Rattlers struggled defensively, allowing 25 points. Despite shooting 75% for the quarter, the Dustdevils led 25-15 going into the second.
The second quarter saw TAMIU maintaining their offensive efficiency, shooting 43.75% from the field. St. Mary's showed improvement on the offensive end but couldn't close the gap. The Dustdevils extended their lead to 45-31 by halftime.
TAMIU faced a slightly tougher challenge in the third quarter, shooting just 33.33% from the field. However, their defense remained solid, holding St. Mary's to 14 points. St. Mary's comeback efforts were not enough as the Dustdevils got back in rhythm by the end of the third and took a 60-45 lead into the final quarter.
The Dustdevils closed out the game with a balanced performance in the fourth quarter and extended their lead to 29 at one point. TAMIU's stifling defense forced 34 turnovers in the game and ultimately proved too much for the Rattlers, as the Dustdevils took the victory 77-62.
Raiana Brown led the Dustdevils with 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Samiyah Worrell added 14 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.
Ngozi Obineke and
Bridgette Tello had strong performances, contributing 13 points and 10 points respectively.
With the victory, the Dustdevils improve to 18-4 and 10-4 in the Lone Star Conference. The Dustdevils continue their road trip on Saturday, February 3 at 1pm when they face St. Edward's in Austin, TX.
