Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (21-6, 13-6) faced the Patriots of UT Tyler (21-5, 15-2) in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU KCB and fell, 63-60.
After a closely contested first quarter, UT Tyler held a slim lead, shooting 31.58% from the field, with
Raiana Brown led TAMIU in the quarter with strong inside play.
UT Tyler extended their lead in the second quarter, shooting an impressive 58.33% from the field. However, TAMIU stayed within reach, with
Malea Jackson and
Ngozi Obineke making crucial shots. The Patriots took a 32-28 lead into halftime.
The Dustdevils mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring UT Tyler 21-16.
Raiana Brown continued to dominate, while
Samiyah Worrell and
Malea Jackson contributed with three-pointers. TAMIU took a one-point lead heading into the final quarter, 49-48 .
A thrilling final quarter featured back-and-forth action. UT Tyler regained control, with Ella Bradley's inside presence and crucial free throws down the stretch. TAMIU fought hard, but UT Tyler managed to secure the victory, closing out the game 63-60.
Raiana Brown led the Dustdevils with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Malea Jackson contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Ngozi Obineke added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Dustdevils return to action in Lawton, OK on Thursday, February 22 to face the Cameron Aggies at 5:30pm.
