Frisco, Texas – The #7 Dustdevils (18-11) opened post season play with a 85-75 upset win over #2 Dallas Baptist (24-4) in their first ever LSC Tournament appearance and the second upset over DBU this season.
In a tightly contested first half with 12 lead changes, the Dustdevils shot 16-30 (53%) from the field and 2-9 (22%) from three-point range.
John Achebe led TAMIU's offense with 12 first-half points.
Esteban Roacho was right behind him with ten.
DBU shot 62% on 16-26 from the field and 38% (3-8) from beyond the arc in the first half.
After a lot of back-and-forth action, the Dustdevils trailed 36-43 at the half.
The Dustdevils kept the momentum on their side in the second half, led again by Achebe and Roacho. Late in the second half, the Dustdevils went on a 19-0 run to extend the lead to as much as 13 points with 5:24 left on the clock. The TAMIU offense put up 49 points in the second half behind 14-24 (58.33%) from the field and 5-9 (55.56%) from beyond the arc.
The Patriots were held to just 32 points, shooting 12-27 (44.44%) from the field and just 3-13 (33.3%) from three-point range.
Esteban Roacho led the charge with a career-high 25 points.
John Achebe was close behind with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Jaylen Thompson added 14 points and 9 rebounds.
Jalen Barnes and
Olaverr Camacho also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
With the win, the Dustdevils advance to face Lubbock Christian in the Semifinal round on Saturday, March 9 at 12:00pm.
