Silver City, New Mexico – The Dustdevils traveled to Silver City to take on the Western New Mexico Mustangs in Lone Star Conference play on Friday.
Game 1
The Dustdevils and Mustangs were knotted at zero through the first three innings of game one. TAMIU got on the board first in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from
Victoria Gonzalez.
Victoria Espinoza then brought in three more with a three-run home run putting the Dustdevils up 4-0.
In the home half of the fourth, the Mustangs battled and scored five runs, putting them ahead by one.
Espizona hit her second home run of the game, this one bringing in
Sarah Chavez to put the Dustdevils back in front 6-5.
A pair of solo shots and a sacrifice bunt put the Mustangs back ahead 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Carla Arellano got the start for the Dustdevils and finished the game with 5.1 innings pitched and eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts.
Zakayia Fredrick came on in relief and allowed just one hit.
The Dustdevil offense finished with six runs on nine hits, led by Espinoza's 5-RBI day at the plate.
Game 2
The Mustangs got the scoring started early in game two as they took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Dustdevils got two in the top of the second courtesy of a two-run home run by
Zaria Brigham and added two more in the third with Espinoza's third home run of the day, putting them ahead 4-1.
WNMU scored four in the home half of the third, putting them in front 5-4.
After a scoreless fourth on both sides, the Dustdevils tallied six runs in the fifth.
Zaria Brigham doubled,
Eva Garcia and
Kennedy Griego doubled followed by a double from
Alex Hernandez putting the Dustdevils ahead 10-5.
The Mustangs scored three in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to catch the Dustdevils who took game two by a score of 10-8.
Kylie Goad started on the mound for TAMIU and pitched four innings and allowed six runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Fredrick pitched three innings in relief allowing two runs on two hits with one walk.
The Dustdevils finish the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
