Dustdevils Hold #1 West Texas A&M to 3 Runs in Doubleheader

Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils returned home after a six-game road trip to take on the #1 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs. Despite dropping both games of the doubleheader, the Dustdevils held the number one team in the country to just three runs between the two games.

Game One
Carla Arellano got the start on the mound for the Dustdevils and faced the task of shutting down the top offense in the Lone Star Conference.

Arellano set the tone in the top of the first as she retired the side with a line out, strikeout and pop out.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Lady Buffs got on the board with a two-run home run to put them ahead 2-0.

The Dustdevils got a run back in the home half of the third with an RBI single from Kennedy Griego that brought home Eva Garcia.

Throughout the game, the usually explosive Lady Buffs offense only saw runners in scoring position five times.

The Lady Buffs escaped game one with a 2-1 win as Emilee Boyer held the TAMIU offense to one run on three hits.

Arellano went the distance for the Dustdevils, pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Game Two
Game two of the doubleheader featured another pitching duel between the Lady Buffs and the Dustdevils.

Kylie Goad held the Lady Buffs scoreless into the sixth inning which is the longest time that the West Texas offense has been held scoreless.

The lone run of the game came via a solo home run that secured the 1-0 victory. It is only the second time this season the Lady Buffs have been held to just one run.

Goad pitched 6.0 innings for TAMIU and allowed just one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Zakayia Fredrick pitched one inning in relief and did not allow a hit.

The series concludes on Sunday at Dustdevil Softball Field with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
